1. Eat breakfast every day. When you were a child, your mother probably told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. She was right. What you eat for breakfast sets the tone for your entire day. If you skip it, you won't just be hungry. You'll lack the nutrients and energy-producing calories your body needs to concentrate, your motor skills may suffer, and your reaction time will be impaired (which is not good if you're driving). Your metabolism will slow down and you'll retain more weight when you inevitably overindulge at lunch.
2. Snack often, but eat the right kinds of snacks. There's no harm in eating between meals. In fact, smart snacking will help keep your energy levels up and help you burn more calories. Choose energy-producing foods such as peanut butter, nuts, seeds, dried fruits, whole grains, and cheese. Only eat a handful of any of these things, and don't eat more than two of these things for any given snack. That will give you what you need to burn those calories, without packing on more calories than you can work off.
3. Get some moderate exercise several times a week. This should be exercise that gets your heart rate up for a sustained period of time, just enough so that you're slightly out of breath when you talk. A moderately-paced walk, a bike ride, or even some heavy housework will all do the trick.
Bring along some music when you exercise, or get a friend to do it with you, and it will be a lot more fun. When it's fun, you're more likely to do it.
